http://xogiving.org/ - go there. now.
from the site:
Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have.

now, the interesting thing (for me, not necessarily for anyone else) is that they are doing this “give one get one” promotion, where if you donate $399, one laptop will be sent to a child in a foreign country who needs one, and another one will be sent to you (or the person of your choosing). and the kicker, (again, for me) this whole promotion starts on November 12, which happens to be my birthday. =P
in any case, i’ve been updated periodically about what’s going on with the one-laptop-per-child initiative, because my mother, who is a principal at a middle school in the boston, ma area actually knows the man who started the whole thing. for a while, they were in the process of working out a deal so that my mother could get a bunch of these things for the kids at her school. unfortunately, it didn’t end up happening, because the district ended up deciding on macbooks (which, of course, is a better choice anyway).
so, if you’ve got an extra $399 kicking around (god knows i don’t) please consider donating to this cause. it’s a great thing, bringing technology to those that don’t have the means. and honestly, getting one of these awesomely badass $200 laptops would totally be worth more than the money you’re spending to help out these folks who are much needier than you and i combined.
