First BloggingZoom Annoyance

by Eric Socia

ok, so this isn’t so much an annoyance with BloggingZoom or it’s service, per se, but more towards people who abuse it, even if it’s unintentional or indirect.

i noticed tonight, after submitting my previous post about AdSense, that somebody had already Zoomed it.
“cool,” i thought, “i had doubts that anybody would bother zooming that one, since it’s just a small little update about my unimportant issues while signing up for AdSense. it’s not like a tip, or a link to a great article, or anything that would really interest anybody but me… wait a second…”

so, i checked out the person that Zoomed it. i went to their profile, and checked on the submissions they had made.
turns out, this person doesn’t even make posts in a category that’s even similar to Blogging (which is my main category for BZ submission) and then i noticed that they had made close to 5 submissions within minutes of eachother… this got me thinking.

in my previous post about BZ i mentioned a small tip about how to get more people to Zoom your submissions, which was to Zoom their submissions. it appears as though this user has done that, and leads me to believe that they’ve Zoomed my submission solely to get me to go look at and possibly Zoom theirs.

now, while this is certainly not against the rules, or even a bad idea in any way, it really aggrevated me for some reason. granted it was only a fraction of my time that was wasted by going to this user’s profile and looking at his submissions, but really. what a cheap trick. when i wrote my BZ review and left that little tip in there, i was thinking more along the lines of Zooming other people’s posts that were similar to yours, because there’s a greater chance that they would be interested in your submissions as well. i didn’t mean just go freely Zooming every upcoming submission that you come across, just to get more people to look at yours.

as i said, none of this is illegal, or even immoral. it just made me feel i had to clarify what i meant when i threw that tip out there in my review of this wonderful service.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I haven’t had that problem, but I can see people doing that and actually thinking it’s a good idea.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will do to try to get traffic, even if they aren’t smart enough to realize that traffic that isn’t interested in what they have to say is useless to them.

That’s a very interesting observation Eric! I’m always amazed at the lengths people will go to. ;) As you said, the most important thing for you will be to make BZ friends that share your interests.

The people that are getting the most zooms, and the most traffic are the ones that are making friends and participating by visiting sites. It seems like you’re doing that and if you keep doing it you’ll see it pay off more and more as time goes on!

I also understand what do you mean. However, even if somebody’s interests are other than “Blogging”, if people blog about them, they are bloggers :-)

and every blogger (or most of them) is eager to learn more about blogging, marketing the blog etc etc

So, while I do not want to suggest that there are no people who simply go around and zoom and zoom just to get some attention, I would not assume that everybody who zooms articles on topics different than his or her own blog is just pulling some “dirty” tricks.

I for example have a blog, that is not about blogging but about my hobby and passion. But in order to be able to keep up I read lots of blogs about blogging etc… And if I like I Stumble, Digg or now Zoom them, eventhough they have nothing to do with the topic of my own blog

i certainly didn’t mean to make it sound as if i had assumed that everyone who zooms articles on topics that are different then theirs were “pulling dirty tricks”

i just meant to say that at the time it seemed as though that’s what this one particular user was doing. apologies if it came across differently :)

thanks for the feedback though!

Personally, as long as my articles get more votes or zooms, I don’t really care for the reason. The more votes or zooms, the better! ;)
