FreeRice.com - Hone Your Vocab Skills AND Help Those In Need
Think you’ve got a good grasp on vocabulary? Do you believe you know a lot of definitions for well-known and some obscure words? Would you like to help out those in need? Then this is for you.
There is a website, FreeRice, that tests your vocabulary knowledge, while at the same time allowing you to send rice to foreign countries in need of supplies. Here’s how it works:
You go to the website, FreeRice.com. You are presented with a screen that holds a word that you may or may not recognize, with four (4) possible definitions. You click on the definition that you think is correct. If you get it right, 10 grains of rice are donated through the United Nations to help end world hunger. If you are wrong, they give you another word. There are no penalties for wrong answers. It is an absolutely wonderful idea.
So far, my best has been getting up to a vocab level of 36.
I urge each and every one of you to go to FreeRice.com, and start playing. If you give it a try, please post a comment and let me know. I’d love to know that at least some people who come here actually care about what’s happening in the world. See if you can beat a 36 vocab level.
Now, I know this post and the previous one have absolutely nothing to do with blogging, but the fact of the matter is: This post and the last one are both about things that are very important to me, and I would like to get other people involved in helping out. These are very important causes, both doing great things for the world. So please, by all means, go to these websites and play, donate, support. Do whatever you can. It may not seem like it, but these things affect everybody in the world, not just those that are receiving the help we offer. Thanks for being patient and at least thinking about helping. It means a lot to me, and I hope it means something to each and every one of you as well. ![]()

You’re not the first place I’ve seen this; it’s wonderful that a site like this is spreading. I don’t remember my score last time I played, but you’ve convinced me to see how I can do against your 36.
PS - I really like seeing blogs promote things like this. A lot of bloggers talk about moving beyond the “mainstream media,” but it’s less often that someone gives their readers something interesting like this, an easy way to make even a small positive change in the world. This is exactly the sort of post that gives the entire blogshpere credibility.

It’s the perfect win-win solution. I get SAT vocabulary practice, and poor people get fed. So far I’ve accumulated close to 100,000 grains of rice. And I can’t get past level 47!
But I can’t stop wondering if this really works. I mean, who’s paying for all this. Sponsors? When we’re in the midst of a global rice crisis?
