Holy Alexa Rank, Batman!
I just jumped from having an Alexa ranking of somewhere over 1,200,000 up to 767,343 sometime in the last 24 hours. I have no idea what caused it, but I’m certainly not complaining.
I still do not fully understand everything that Alexa measures (rank, reach, etc.) but I get the general idea of the rank system. Having a rank of 767,343 is better than over 1.2million… Right?
Anyway, what could have caused this to happen in less than one day? I mean, jumping close to 500,000 spots in less than 24 hours… (I know it was less than 24 hours because I checked my site this morning and I was still around the 1.2million mark. So, really, it’s been somewhere close to 12-18 hours.)
Anybody have any theories? I’d love to get an idea of how this could have happened, so that maybe I can recreate it. ![]()

It’s a running 3 month average. Your low traffic periods from when you first started your blog have rolled off and your higher traffic ones from StumbleUpon and Blogging Zoom during the past few weeks are bringing your average up. Keep going and you’ll break 100K in about 2-3 months.

It is easier to drop from the higher numbers. It gets harder as your number gets lower.
Much sure you have Alexa in your toolbar.

I started my own personal blog last time, same situation as you, alexa rank drop from 1200,000 to 700000, but since then it only changes a lil bit, 500000+ for last week & 400000+ for this week

It’s pretty easy to get a good number quickly if you recieve social media love. My blog is about 200K due to it receiving traffic from Su on a regular basis…

Like golf, lower numbers are better. According to Alexa, there are 767,343 web properties ( domains and subdomains are bundled together ) with more traffic than yours. That’s why its’ a better number than 1.2 million.
They’re a wee bit less accurate than Neilson ratings or Gallop polls. They assume that if they have x% of the browser plug in market, they can normalize the traffic they see to project visitation for the entire public. Which doesn’t exactly work, because the demographics who use Alexa’s toolbar don’t match well with the general public.
Be that as it may, I recently installed their toolbar to get a closer look at how a few of the sites I visit are ranked. And I’ve been reading your blog out of interest. That would help you a little, but not as much as you’ve seen. My own blog went from about 700 K to 650 K when I installed Alexa, so it sounds like you may have ten new Alexa users?
( If you’re not running the Alexa toolbar yourself, and want to see your rank number decrease, you should install the thing…! )

Thank you very much for the info!
I actually did install the toolbar a few days ago, and it certainly is interesting to see how sites are ranked.
And actually, since I made this post, my site is now showing a rank of 662,335 on my toolbar.

Congratulations. But Does alexa rank really matter? It’s just for fun isn’t it?

As of right now, I don’t personally know whether or not Alexa rank truly affects anything. However, it is a great way to see where your blog or website stands compared to the millions and millions of OTHER blogs and/or websites that are on the internet. It’s just a good feeling to me, I guess.

Congrats! Yeah I haven’t considered Alexa rank much either for my sites. It is fun though!

Alexa toolbar!? I think I already have too many toolbars! It would be great if someone developed a toolbar container to keep them active but merge all the most common parts together in one UI. For example, I really only use the PR meter on Google’s toolbar. Everything else could be replaced with small sections from other toolbars I may use.

Congratulations! When you have bigger numbers, they drop off quickly because your sites grows a lot more than some other millions out there do. But once you get into the lower numbers, drops get very miniscule. I’m not even at the really low numbers yet (I’m about 88,000 right now, I think) and I’ve been hovering around the same spot for ages.

It used to be 2 weeks alexa change their ranking. It seems like it is every 5 days now.
