Meet Android: The Future Of Mobile Phones

So I just came across this site, and read about the Android project being developed by the Open Handset Alliance. To summarize (from the OpenHandsetAlliance’s FAQ):

Android is a complete mobile phone software stack. It includes everything a manufacturer or operator needs to build a mobile phone. Android will be made available as open source via the Apache v2 license. Android was designed from the ground up to enable the best user experience possible on a mobile phone. It leverages web and Internet content to provide advanced services such as mobile mashups.

Basically, this SDK (Software Development Kit) will allow developers to create unique applications that are built on a free, open source system for mobile phones. In other words, if you were to get your hands on a mobile phone that did not have any type of Operating System already installed on it, you could build one, from the ground up. Including pretty much anything you can imagine (as long as you can create it, or it’s already been created by somebody else).

This is a HUGE leap for mobile software development. As it stands, the companies that currently have mobile phones on the market are making tons and tons of money from them. But with the release of Android, and others like it, it becomes possible for us as consumers to finally decide if we actually want to continue to pay these companies for their products, or do we want to use something like Android? With Android, we would have access to any and all software that every developer working on it has ever created. Total freedom. No strings attatched.

How much is that iPhone REALLY worth to you?

For a look at some of Android’s capabilities, take a look at this video:

Simply amazing. Imagine how much further phones are going to advance in the next ten years. Its great this technology, it consumes a large proportion of my life as you can probably see.

I completely agree and am in the same boat. Technology as a whole consumes my life. Gadgets, gizmos, etc. I can’t get enough of them!

I can’t wait to be able to get a mobile phone using Android and be able to not have to pay for everything that’s installed on the phone. Just paying for the hardware seems pretty fair to me. ;)

    Thanks for the comment!

I’ve heard of Android … it seems to be taking the world by storm. You’re right, this has got to be the worst thing that’s ever happened to the iPhone, and probably driving Steve Jobs mad.

That’s pretty interesting. I think one day we won’t even need computers, everything will be a hand held device.

I second your opinion. The IT industry really will benefit from this. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

I wouldn’t be suprised, to be honest. I mean the iPhone is still a breakthrough device, but Open Source is almost always just half a step behind and catching up every day.

We’re actually already so close to that right now. I mentioned the iPhone, which as I said in a response above is a breakthrough device in that respect. And devices and platforms like Android are just stepping it up constantly.

You’re definitely right, though. With microtechnology and such, regular computers and laptops will just become icons of the past. They may still be used, but handheld devices will end up being the norm.

It’s almost a scary thought, and yet I’m kind of excited about it. ;)

I cant wait for the real google phone. I hope its not jsut a rumor. Go open source!

I absolutely positively HATE to have to be the one to break it to you…

But the Google Phone is indeed a rumor.

Watch the video I posted above, and you’ll see at the very beginning, one of the founders of Google admits that it is simply a rumor. But Android is the next best thing, so check it out! :)

Well the real question for a lot of people (or me at least), is will the use of this open source software dramatically decrease the cost of having a cell phone plan? I don’t totally understand all the technical details, but I’m hoping it will make my phone bills much cheaper.

Not only a huge leap but a greater strike to our budget. I myself can’t hold myself from buying the best phone for my needs. Seeing this new model makes me wonder how much it will cost and if I will afford buying such a thing in the future.

It sounds simple and great to build your own OS, but I am not sure how many people have the technical knowledge to do that. Still interested to test someday and see what can do :)

One thing good about Android is that its open source and it allows applications to be run in the background. iPhone can’t support background applications I think.

The second thing I think is good about the Android platform is that, you can have a choice of manufacturers since its just an OS and not the entire phone.

IT is a rather cut phone, but I don’t know if it will be a hit. If you look at it on the features side, It does not seem to have very many. Oh well, we will see how it turns out. If there is an update on it, I will be most grateful if you post on it.

I’m confused with Google’s announcement that everything about Android is open source.

The Android Software Development Kit License Agreement states that:

3.2 You agree that Google (or Google’s licensors) own all legal right, title and interest in and to the SDK, including any intellectual property rights which subsist in the SDK. Use, reproduction and distribution of components of the SDK licensed under an open source software license are governed solely by the terms of that open source software license and not by this License Agreement. Until the SDK is released under an open source license, you may not extract the source code or create a derivative work of the SDK.

Well, anyway, I’m definitely excited for the upcoming XPERIA X1. It’s not open source but I do love Sony Ericsson.

Wow the Android software is something to look out for. I’m going to get the new 3G iphone, I might try Android on that little sucker. I’ve worked with phones and helped people set things up before so I’m going to give this program a shot, I’ll let you guys know how well my new phone works and maybe make a video about it so everyone can see! Thanks for posting this buddy!

    Mobile phone news

Google is really pushing along the creativity of the applications available on Android.

When the handsets are finally released, I think the 3rd party applications are what’s going to drive the want for an Android-based handset, and not the base software itself.
