FreeRice.com - Hone Your Vocab Skills AND Help Those In Need

November 13th, 2007 by Eric Socia

Think you’ve got a good grasp on vocabulary? Do you believe you know a lot of definitions for well-known and some obscure words? Would you like to help out those in need? Then this is for you.

FreeRice.com

There is a website, FreeRice, that tests your vocabulary knowledge, while at the same time allowing you to send rice to foreign countries in need of supplies. Here’s how it works:

You go to the website, FreeRice.com. You are presented with a screen that holds a word that you may or may not recognize, with four (4) possible definitions. You click on the definition that you think is correct. If you get it right, 10 grains of rice are donated through the United Nations to help end world hunger. If you are wrong, they give you another word. There are no penalties for wrong answers. It is an absolutely wonderful idea.

So far, my best has been getting up to a vocab level of 36.

I urge each and every one of you to go to FreeRice.com, and start playing. If you give it a try, please post a comment and let me know. I’d love to know that at least some people who come here actually care about what’s happening in the world. See if you can beat a 36 vocab level. ;)

Now, I know this post and the previous one have absolutely nothing to do with blogging, but the fact of the matter is: This post and the last one are both about things that are very important to me, and I would like to get other people involved in helping out. These are very important causes, both doing great things for the world. So please, by all means, go to these websites and play, donate, support. Do whatever you can. It may not seem like it, but these things affect everybody in the world, not just those that are receiving the help we offer. Thanks for being patient and at least thinking about helping. It means a lot to me, and I hope it means something to each and every one of you as well. :)

Latest OLPC Development, And A Reminder About XOGiving

November 10th, 2007 by Eric Socia

Well, since this Monday is the first day of XOGiving, (and also my birthday =P), the initiative that will allow consumers to spend $399 to send an OLPC laptop to a child in the “developing world,” and as a bonus, get one sent to yourself as well, I figured it’s about time to write about another development in the OLPC initiative.

According to TechNewsWorld.com, the video game company Electronic Arts has donated the rights to the game SimCity to the OLPC foundation. The game will start to be included on the nifty little laptops so that children can play it and learn about what it takes to build and manage a city, taking into account “economic and environmental consequences to their decisions.”

When I first started reading the article I wasn’t entirely sure if I agreed with this. But now, I’m starting to realize it may be a good idea after all. They may be less fortunate than us, but that doesn’t make them necessarily inferior, and so they should be able to understand the real concept of the game as more than ‘just a game.’ And if some of them don’t, then at least they have a game they can use to live out a life completely different than their own, which is fun for just about everybody. I mean, really, what else is having an online identity all about? ;)

Am I right? Am I wrong? Half right? Half wrong? Leave your thoughts on the subject below.

Must-Read Articles For New Bloggers

November 6th, 2007 by Eric Socia

being a relatively new blogger myself, i realize how frustrating and confusing it can be to get started. there are so many things to learn, so many other blogs to learn from, so many services to sign up for that can help immensely when you’re beginning.

so i’ve decided to start a list of articles and posts from around the sphere that i’ve either found useful myself, or believe would be useful to others that are trying to get their blogs up and running. this list will be updated as i find other articles that i think should be added (so remember to check back periodically!).

i hope this helps somebody. enjoy! :)

The List (in no particular order):

BloggingZoom: Get Zoomed And See The Difference!

November 2nd, 2007 by Eric Socia

BloggingZoom is the newest and greatest blog promotion site around. it’s style is reminiscent of Digg, but this site is quite different. BloggingZoom is completely and utterly geared towards bloggers. created by and for bloggers.

i just signed up for it about an hour ago, and i’ve already gained at least one reader :)

here’s how it works:

1. Sign Up:

same as just about every other service. enter a username, email address, password, etc., click submit, and you’re ready to start submitting content. that simple.

2. Submit Content:

click on “Submit New Post” located in the bar that has buttons for “Published Posts” and “Upcoming Posts”. fill in the direct (permalink) url to the article/post you’re submitting, fill out a 350 character description, enter in some keywords/tags, and click Submit. again, that simple. your new submission will show up in the “Upcoming Posts” area and once it receives enough Zooms from other users, it will jump over to the “Published Posts” spot on the front page of the website! talk about a great and easy way to gain exposure. :)

3. Zoom Other Users’ Content:

the best way to ensure that you get even more traffic, is to click the little Zoom button next to other articles posted by other users that are of interest to you. that way, you find content that you’re interested in, and by Zooming others’ submissions, they see that and are much more likely to check out your submissions and Zoom them as well!

all in all, i must say that this seems like it will really make getting your blog more traffic much easier and way more fun, as well. :) so go check it out! BloggingZoom.com

TechnoMoney - Earn Money Online With a 10th Grader!

October 30th, 2007 by Eric Socia

do you ever get tired of the endless amounts of blogs written about blogging? i did.

until i found TechnoMoney.

it’s a blog written about blogging and how to get your blog heard and make money with it (wait for it…) but the kicker is that it’s entirely written and maintained by a 10th grader.

did you hear that? that’s the sound of you and me realizing how much smarter a high school student can be than us. i mean, i’m 24, turning 25 in a couple weeks, and i feel completely stupefied right now. i’ve already harvested a couple of absolutely fantastic tips from this guy… although putting them to use is another story…

if you’ve started a blog or are thinking about doing so, but aren’t sure what’s possible, or how to go about getting really started in the crazy blogosphere, i HIGHLY recommend heading over to TechnoMoney and learning a thing or two from a 10th grader who’s obviously smarter than us.

oh, and by the way, in case you were wondering, the two tips i’ve found most useful (as far as my blog is concerned) are:

“Content is King” is only half the story
and
The Amazing Power of Commenting
